Charles Butt started working for the family business, Texas grocery chain H-E-B, at age 8. Florence Butt, his grandmother, founded the company in 1905 after her husband was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was unable to work. Her son Howard took over in the 1920s and expanded throughout Texas. Charles became chairman and CEO in 1971 and is today the majority shareholder. Two of his siblings and two nephews own stakes in the company as well. H-E-B has 316 stores in Texas, plus 52 stores in Mexico, and donates 5% of pretax profits to charity.

American businessman and grocer, Charles Butt, and family has a net worth of $9.3 billion as of December 2015, according to Bloomberg. Charles Butt best known for the HEB supermarket chain in Texas and northern Mexico.  The Texas-born Charles Butt started working as a bag boy at the age of eight in his father’s supermarket. His grandmother Florence Butt, founded H.E. Butt Grocery in 1905 from a small house in Kerrville, Texas. Charles Butt graduated from University of Wharton School with a Bachelor of Arts / Science and earned a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He took over the family’s H-E-B supermarket chain in 1971.The H-E-B grocery chain now boasts an annual sales of over $15 billion and has stores in Louisiana and Mexico with headquarter in San Antonio. The firm’s Central Market gourmet and organic line increasingly competes with Whole Foods. H-E-B donates 5% of pretax profits to charity. The HEB brand has expanded into several different varieties over the years, including the Central Market brand, a Whole Foods inspired supermarket chain featuring a wide variety of gourmet options, cooking classes.
